- Be sure to remove all the nearby clothing so you can see clearly what to do.
- Take away any dirt or other material that may be touching the bleeding wounds.
- Raise the affected area, this will help in reducing the flow of blood to the affected area, thus helping to stop the bleeding, so raise the affected area carefully without causing more harm.
- If the injury is on the hand or arm, simply raise it above the head. If the injury is to a lower limb, lie down and raise the affected area above the level of the heart.
- Then apply a thick pad of sterile gauze, or a freshly ironed handkerchief, over the wound, bandaging this firmly in place.
- For small wounds, such as cuts and scratches, just clean the area thoroughly with soap and warm water.
- Then apply some suitable disinfectant.
- Cover this with a sterile gauze dressing, and bandage carefully.
- By applying pressure to the wound is the best way to stop it from bleeding.
- Place a clean and dry piece of material such as a bandage, towel, or cloth on the wound and apply pressure with both hands.
- Maintain firm and continuous pressure until the bleeding has stopped.
- By applying ice to the bleeding wounds will constrict the blood vessels, allowing a clot to form more quickly to stop the bleeding wounds.
- Checking too soon to see if the bleeding has stopped may interfere with the healing process.

When the bleeding wounds are becoming life-threatening, and the victim is confused and is sliding towards unconsciousness, then it’s time to seek prompt medical attention. Some of the signs include:
- Shortness of breath
- Increased heart rate
- When the victim becomes weak and dizzy and his speech is becoming incoherent.
- Large quantity of blood spurting out of the wound
- Soaked clothes, and bandages with blood, indicating serious loss of blood
- When the victim is lying down motionless
- Loss of all or any part of an arm or leg
- If the bleeding wounds were caused by an animal or human bite, especially when the person has not had a tetanus shot in the last 5 years
